If your vehicle has lane keeping, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, or lane-departure warning, it's watching the road through a camera — and on most vehicles that camera is mounted to the windshield, looking through the glass.
Replace the glass and the camera's aim changes. Even a fraction of a degree matters at the distance these systems measure. Calibration is the procedure that re-teaches the camera exactly where it's pointing, so the safety systems read the road correctly again.
This is not optional maintenance. A camera that thinks the road is somewhere it isn't is worse than no camera at all.
Static and dynamic — and why doing both matters
There are two kinds of calibration, and different vehicles need different ones. Some need both.
Static is done in the shop: the vehicle sits at measured distances from a calibrated target board, level and square, while the system re-learns its reference points. It needs floor space, controlled lighting, and precise measurement.
Dynamic is done on the road: the vehicle is driven at a specified speed on well-marked roads while the system recalibrates against real lane lines and real traffic.
